Dhaba dal is a popular Indian dish made from lentils cooked in a delicious onion-tomato sauce and mixed with spices. This is a rustic yet hearty dish perfect for the cold winter months.
Lentils are first soaked overnight, then cooked in a pressure cooker or pot until soft. When the lentils are cooked, add them to the pot with tomato juice. Tomato sauce is made by mixing tomatoes, onion, ginger-garlic paste and spices.
Then cook the dhaba dal for a few minutes until the gravy thickens and the flavor infuses into the lentils. The dish is then seasoned with a handful of spices such as cumin seeds, mustard seeds and curry leaves. Tadpoles add a burst of flavor and aroma to the dish.
Dhaba dal is usually eaten with Indian flatbreads such as roti, paratha or naan. It can be made with rice or quinoa. This dish is often eaten along with other Indian dishes like Raita, salad and pickles.
